Telecommunications market of BoliviaPhone Cards, Calling Cards |
| The opening of the Bolivian telecom market in November 2001 led to greater investments in the sector and lower consumer prices. However, fixed-line teledensity is still low at about 7%. Ethnic conflicts, socio-economic problems and natural disasters have slowed down telecom growth. With the arrival of some political stability, Bolivian economy picked up in late 2003 through 2004, and telcos invested US$100 million in 2004. Though small compared with neighbouring countries, Bolivia’s broadband market was the fastest growing telecom sector in 2004, together with mobile telephony. Mobile subscribers outnumber fixed phones by more than two to one. Two companies offer GSM/GPRS services, making the country one of Latin America’s most active GSM markets. |
