Sweden has one of the most developed Internet and broadband markets in the EU. Almost 6.7 million Swedes are regular users of the Internet, making the country one of the most online nations in Europe. Sweden’s Internet market is migrating rapidly from dial-up to various modes of broadband access. Broadband penetration approached 15% in early 2005, with high levels of DSL, cable modem, satellite, and fixed wireless adoption. Metro Ethernet, fibre, WLAN and powerline communication (BPL) access technologies are also available. In the mobile field, 3G services are available from four operators.
Sweden has one of Europe’s highest broadband penetration levels, and has invested heavily in DSL and fibre upgrades. There are two public broadcast channels, SVT1 and SVT2, and one commercial channel TV4 that must be carried on all platforms. The largest cable TV operators are Com hem, Kabelvision, and UPC Sweden. Transmissions of digital terrestrial TV began in 1999, and more than 98% of Swedes can access DTT. There are several commercial satellite channels, including TV3, Channel 5, TV6, ZTV, and TV8. A range of interactive TV services is available, from basic electronic program guides to developing TV-commerce services.
