Telecommunications market of UruguayPhone Cards, Calling Cards |
| Uruguay’s long-distance and international telephone sectors were liberalised in February 2001, but state-owned Antel retains a monopoly over local telephony. Yet the country leads Latin America in many key indicators (teledensity, computer, Internet penetration), and has the region’s highest literacy rate. The PSTN has been wholly digital since 1997 and reaches over 30% of the population, well above neighbouring Argentina or Brazil. ADSL services are also readily available. Following the sale of Movicom BellSouth to Telefonica, and the award of new mobile licences in May 2004 to Telefónica Móviles and America Movil, Uruguay’s mobile market is now divided between three competitors: Antel, Telefonica Moviles and America Movil. Antel launched GSM services in April 2004. |
